Beate Köhne created her first scratch paintings in 2016 during a month-long working holiday in Essaouria, Morocco, which she wanted to spend without oil paints. In addition to numerous works on paper, she created works on ‘scratch art paper’, which she had previously discovered in an artists' supplies shop. It reminded her of the works they used to make in kindergarten: colourful wax crayons as a background, black crayons on top and then scratching. No wonder that ‘Scratch Art - Paper’ is also produced with a rainbow background ...

Since then, scratch paintings have often been created while travelling, for example in 2021 during a residency at Kunsthaus Stove (on the Salzhaff in Mecklenburg) and in 2022 during a residency scholarship in North Macedonia.
